I'm at my wits end. The documentation is far from clear on this point.

Basically I have the following design: http://www.kdwebserver.co.uk/jfhillebrand/preview/finalhome.html

As you can see I have 4 different containers (the main content, search, news and links) but am  having a huge amount of trouble actually implementing them. There is a severe lack of examples of multi-panel layouts, if I could just view a skin/component which has something like this I could figure it out myself. Unfortunately any examples I've found have to be paid for to download them. (or I have to pay for tutorials)

My problem is not a lack of understand about CSS and building websites (i've been building websites for over 8 years now), but instead a complete and utter lack of understand of DotNetNuke. I've now read and reread the documentation but it isnt clear so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

Scott

I don't understand your issues - the default DNN skin comes with 5 panes and having 4 of them shall not be a problem. A pane is just a td or div with ID and runat = "Server" attribute, each pane can be filled with one or more modules aligned vertically.

You don't need to impliment any CSS to do panels..... all you need is an HTML document with a <BODY>, create a table with the number of sections you want, goto the <TD> for each cell and enter the required information <TD id="ContentPane" runat="server">.  The id should be ContentPane, LeftPane, RightPane, etc.... You don't need a pane for most other things because graphics and such can be incorporated into the skin and you can use [SOLPARTMENU] to place the menu (at least in the versions I have installed, but I believe I have the latest on several sites).

If you want I could write and send you a quick HTML file of a skin so that you can see how it will look before it gets bundled for upload.  It's really not very complicated once you can see how it should look.

The problem is that I want to put MULTIPLE panels in a panel, so for example, in the RightPane I want to put in 5 or 6 custom panes which you can put modules inside.

How do I create multiple container files and apply them? I have created seperate files for the contentpane, leftpane and rightpane, but the container chooser only allows me to choose one of them. Looks like i'm going to have to resort to paying someone else to install the bloody thing.

Ok, for a minute there I thought I knew what you were asking, but now I'm just confused.

If I'm on the right track, what you want to do is split a panel, such as the left panel, into seperate panels?  Is this close?  Why do you want to split a panel?  A panel is basically just a definition of a column, the number of rows is how many modules are in it.  If you want to put 5 modules in the right column, then they will stack on top of one another vertically.  From the picture you gave as an example, you need only 3 panels.  Your menu on the left side can be done with XML and/or some CSS (or if you really want it custom you can make a new control), same with the login at the top, and the right column is just two modules (news and links).

I don't know if that has anything to do with what your trying to do, but I guess I need to know if I'm even close.  If I were you I would just use [LOGIN] for the user login and [SOLPARTMENU] for the menu until I got the hang of it or wanted to dive into making custom controls for my menu and login.  In the XML for the skin you can take the [SOLPARTMENU] object and make it vertical with arrows and such and that way it's just part of the skin.  Then the skin would actually be a leftpane cell with another cell above it with [SOLPARTMENU] in it.  I can give you an example of this if you want.
