I just discovered that DNN creates a bunch of URLs that point to the same content while using a 3rd party sitemap generator on my site.

Example follows (Not spamming - the page is worthless from a commercial standpoint)

I only created one of those pages and DNN just took off with it. I searched this forum and googled for info, but the only answer I found was on an mp3 that I'd have to subscribe for. Surely I'm not the only one using DNN that has encountered this problem since I've seen it referred to on several blogs - just no solution.

Any ideas on how to stop the dupe content from within DNN without having to do a ton of 301 redirects after the fact?

I suggest to contact the module developer.

This isn't a module creating the sitemap and screwing something up - I'm talking about a web-based app crawling the site and returning all those duplicate urls for the same content. The spidering app has nothing to do with the problem. As my example above shows, DNN is coming up with multiple URLs for nearly every page I'm coming up with though there is only one copy.

I saw teasers to information at
http://www.dnncreative.com/Tutorials/HowtobuildawebsiteinDotNetNuke/SkinDesignConsiderations/tabid/215/Default.aspx
http://dotnetslackers.com/Research/re-15813_DotNetNuke_Search_Engine_Optimization_MP3_Interview.aspx

about the default installation of DNN causing duplicate content issues, but the solution wasn't available.

It sounds like you are talking about multiple Urls pointing to the same content.

You can actually put anything you want on the DNN friendly url and as long as DNN finds the tabid then you will get that page.

The only way to keep multiple urls for the same content from getting indexed is to insure that you do not expose multiple Urls.  It sounds like the 3rd party site map may be generating multiple Urls to the same content, but I can't say that DNN never does this either.

In the web.config is a setting for DisplayPageNmaes in the Url Rewriter, you can try setting to that false and it may help.

So are you trying to say google won't find any url that is not exposed? This is so wrong, it has been confirmed that google can find any url that you can find, even if their are no links pointing to it. Also how do we stop from users making a mistake and the mistakenly type in wrong category name? http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Anyfoldername/tabid/799/Default.aspx returns a valid 200 header, which is wrong, it should return a valid 404 page. This is a serious issue, which will cause google to find supplemental results. I have some sites, that already are returning supplemental results due to this issue. If this is not fixed, every dotnetnuke site will get penalized.

Thanks,

Harjit
