Brilliant! :-)  I had ASP 1.0 in there, but not 2.0
I added that and now I'm back on the road again.  Thanks a million!  Of course, it's not running yet, but now I'm getting asp pages served and getting error messages that I can track down and solve (connectionstring errors, etc).  It's very frustrating when IIS won't do something like this and doesn't leave any information as to why in the event log or the web log.

ok, here's the latest... I had followed Steve Schofield's advice page: http://www.iislogs.com/articles/dnnonw2k3dc/ and if I use his connection string:
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=ipofmachine;Initial Catalog=dotnetnuke;Integrated Security=SSPI;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
Then I get "ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString" (both on the DNN error page and in the Application event log.  I assume that ipofmachine should be replaced by the machine's IP address.  If I put the local address, or 127.0.0.1, or just localhost, then the error goes away and get "internet explorer cannot display the webpage", and nothing in the event log.
Augh! I'm so close I can TASTE it ;-)
