Is there a way to easily migrate a DNN4 parent portal to a new installation of the same version of DNN?

The scenario is quite simple, really. I need to develop a prototype site before the site is actually matched up to its domain. Since I don't have any spare domains sitting around that I can wire up to it, I would like to use a canonical domain alias to house the prototype (http://prototype.mainsite.com). Then, at a later time, I need to move the site that has been built onto a new DNN4 installation, as mail is unfriendly under a multi-portal install (on my host, anyway).

Is there any way for me to accomplish this with a minimal amount of headache? Thanks much in advance.

AFAIK, the single option for a clean separation of a single portal is to copy installation files and database and remove all unwanted portals.

In that event, wouldn't the data be corrupt by the portal ID being different? Also, since the once non-host parent portal was obviously sharing data with other portals, wouldn't the new installation have all of the other portals' data as well?

My interest is not in keeping the user base. In fact, I don't want the user base at all. I simply need the site's pages, content, and files to be duplicated as is.

I did see an export option under the host's "Portals" menu option. It looked to me as though it would copy the site pages and such (for use as a template), but there was an option there to copy the content as well. Apparently it creates a file (not sure of what type, or where). Does this seem like it will do what it is that I need, or are there problems with doing this that I should be aware of?

no, if you copy the complete installation and remove the extracted portal from original DNN and all others from copied one, the ID will not change. Portals do not share data, only user base is stored in common table (due to used ASP.Net membership provider from Microsoft).

An exported template will only contain modules, that support the export/import interface and you might loose some of the settings. But it might be worth trying first.
