Hi Frank,
We are always trying to find ways to improve customer service and I appreciate you making me aware of this situation so that it can be corrected.  You questions certainly should have been answered differently.  It is true that we don't offer a trial version, but we have yet to come across a hosting situation where Active Forums will not run properly.  Granted, some hosting providers perform better than others, but that is another topic entirely.

We also get numerous requests for free license for what claim to be non-profits.  However, we do offer significant discounts for documented non-profits, .net related user groups and education facilities.

Please feel free to email directly if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Will

Will, please feel free to point out any issues as I am going to launch a Beta this weekend. (Although I can understand why you may not want to, but if its something you don't want to deal w/ on DNN please bring it on!)

Will can definitely speak for himself, but I do want to add a couple things.
  • I have never heard anyone complain about Active Forums like this before.
  • Active Modules can provide a better support solution than I can because of its dedicated resources.
I hate to say its a pay what you get for type of thing but in some situations it is. While I attempt to provide a solid out of the box product and support it with documentation and answering forum posts, I cannot have the same turn around time as a paid for solution. I am pretty good about answering all forum posts here in a day or two depending on whats going on with me, but I also understand this is not acceptable in all situations. Honestly, in the past I have even recommended Active Forums to clients depending on their situation (and as long as they didn't require custom changes).

y01nk is being a bit dramatic .... Nobody has ever aboned the code and every new release will upgrade a previous release.

Except for occasions like this:

Unless one is willing to upgrade their entire site, the forum version can become incompatible with the portal.

I am not trying to be antagonistic or spiteful, just providing my "end user" experience- and answering a question posed about what is "best".

I look forward to dogfooding the next release here.

A person not willing to upgrade the site is not a problem with the forums.  For the forums to support certain features, it requires some base level of support from the framework.  This is not uncommon for any product across a wide range of platforms, not just DotNetNuke.  Nobody would say that we abandoned DotNetNuke because we stopped supporting MS Access.  It is a fact of life in the digital world that sometimes to get the latest product features, you have to also be running the latest platform.
