I think when everyone talks about getting AJAX integrated they need to be much more specific.  All AJAX means is using Asynchronous Javascript And XML.  DNN has used AJAX ever since it integrated callbacks, back in version 3.2. I believe when most people refer to integrating AJAX, they are referring to the MS implementation (formally named Atlas).  Correct me if I am wrong.

Some examples of the current AJAX functionality already found in DNN are

  • Populate on demand for treeview, and DNNMenu
  • Edit In Place for module titles and HTML/Text
  • Any modules using DNN WebControls like TextSuggest

Something like DragNDrop of Modules are technically not AJAX enabled (they do a postback to persist), but could be.

I will probably blog on some examples of enhancements that I will be pushing for 2007, but would also like to hear specifically what you guys have in mind when you say AJAX.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I think about embedding AJAX as standard into DNN, I am talking about the Microsoft codename Atlas implimentation.

Admitedly, some modules already have support for this built in, but just getting the RC1 AJAX (Atlas) platform to dun on DNN is a hassle. Eventually (maybe V5???) I think it would be beneficial to build this functionality into the core, and the core projects, and ship DNN pre-configured and ready to run.

Another thought on improvements would be to try and develop some form of automated installation routine.  I've set DNN up on dozens of machines in a testing and development environment, and have had problems every single time.  If thye IIS setup and the permissions setup could be automated, this would make everyone's lives easier.

Although I like the way this threads can enrich the discussion. It will be more visible to the CT to post suggestions for enhancements in the Public section of Gemini. Then simply refer to a post per enhancement suggestion using a link.

Do you know the truth when you hear it?

One more thing I would like to add to my list is W3C/XHTML compliance. I know cathal has already done some work on this.

In the spirit of the original post, I am going to suggest some significant enhancements (and request for feedback).

  1. Enhanced Unified Extensible Installer - to enable Module, Skins, Providers, EditControls for the Property Editor, Control Panels (plus anything that a module developer might wish to install, such as templates for a templatable module).
  2. User based permissions - Allow Users to be assigned to permissions (in addition to roles).
  3. Personal pages - allow a portal to provide Myspace.com like features (would require (2) above)
  4. Workflow - a workflow engine that could allow module developers to define and use "Workflow items"
  5. Enhanced Search - speaks for itself

User based permissions would make a huge difference.  I also think that the roles provider should be extended to be hierarchical, so that a role can be a member of a role; allowing for easier management of user rights.

Workflow is also a huge item, look at how many 3rd party forms products are out there..

How about native support for flexible SSL options?  This item is a big issue for me right now.

A component that would edit IIS settings programattically and tie into the portal editor would be nice, as it would allow the ability to dynamically update host headers.
