I have a DNN installation with a dev.site in a parent portal. I applied a temp domain to that portal and gave it an alias similar to temp.domain.com. Now it's almost time to launch and I want to change that portal alias to prod.domain.com and eventually domain2.com. I've added new portal aliases to that portal but they have no effect. The original alias continues to work and anything new that I had just hangs. I've tried this using the Portal Alias tool under Host menu and also by editing the db and then sending up a new web.config. I'm stumped.

thanks, Chris

To follow up, I can create a new portal and assign several different subdomain aliases to it. I can also assign multiple aliases to the host account. But on one particular parent portal, new aliases don't work and even changing the existing one in the database does not work -- it always hangs unless the original alias is in place. There is also no edit link next to that original alias on the Portal Alias admin page. Has anyone seen this behavior before?

The original default alias is "special". It is the alias that is used when no other alias can match the Url.  This allows for one alias to "catch-all" traffic like a wildcard DNS entry.

My blog ( Portal Alias Explained ) gives more details on this.

The reason you can't edit it, is because you are currently accessing your site with that alias, so DNN keeps you from pulling the rug out from under yourself.

To change the default, access the site through a different one.

Also note that if you change the alias directly in the DB then you need to restart your application because those settings are cached.

Thanks John. I can't add an alias and then change the original. That's the problem. There is no edit link on the original alias regardless of how many new aliases are added to this particular parent portal. I've also tried editing the db directly and restarting the app. Also no dice. For some reason, the only alias that works is the original.

But what you've described works just fine in other parent portals in the same DNN install. I did an "export template" and imported the pages to another portal - that sort of worked but there are lots of broken links because the tab ids changed. I'm trying to figure out how to salvage this quirky portal so I don't have to check every link on a couple hundred tabs.

thanks!

If you change that first alias in the DB, then re-upload your web.config, it should work on the new alias.

I'm at a loss as to why that wouldn't work, but make sure you are not putting in the http:// on the front of your alias, and that you are assigning the right portal ID to any new ones if you do it in the DB.
