I'm a newbie to DNN and recently installed DNN 4.4.0 on GoDaddy in a subdir just fine but I have several questions about ongoing maintenance I am hoping to get some answers and suggestions for.

Questions are:

1. Is there a good way to backup/restore the SQL Server database? I can FTP all the files back to my home system but would also like a means to backup/restore the SQL data to help port to a new site or rebuild the site if need be.

2. Is there a free advanced forum module that will send notifications to registered users when a thread is posted? Ideally something akin to Yahoo groups without the advertising.

3. Will there be means to convert an existing site to a newer DNN release going forward? Seems this was not done from V3 to V4 if I read correctly. Or at least some means to backup a database, convert it, then restore it to a newly installed version of DNN.

Thanks,

Dave Kolb, DotNetCodeSlingers

1. If you don't have access to the SQL server there are some modules that will backup your DB at snowcovered
(I never used them though)
2. The current Forum module does that I think and the new version is in Beta now
(I don't know when the new version will be available)
3. You can upgrade from v3 to v4, the general advice is to do this in small steps (just update regularly)
(not 3.0 to 4.4.0 but 3.0 - 3.1- 3.2 etc)

GoDaddy told me there is no way I can do a backup/restore on my database. I have requested they enhance their SQL Server manager to allow this.

If you use GoDaddy please also ask them to support this.

I could write SQL SMO code but the web user I run as apparently also does not have backup/restore permissions so likely would be a waste of effort to try to do my own backup.

GoDaddy did say they would create a .bak file for me for free but I don't want to ask them every time I need this or when I want to do a restore after screwing my database up by testing.

Dave
