P.S.

If your fear of replication or otherwise updating multiple tables through the provider is because you don't want password information stored in the DNN database; you can get around storing the password in the tables.

Are your requirements that you cannot use replication (the services named replication, not theory).

Or are your requirements that you cannot have user information also stored in the DNN database?  It would seem a strange requirement if it was just that you didn't want the information (as a duplicate, maintained by the provider itself - not any form of replication) in the DNN database.

Thanks, Brian and Matt.

The no-data-replication requirement is really that they want no data duplication. There should be just one copy of all the user data, and it should be in the outside app's data store. I have already questioned this requirement and been shot down, so I'm stuck with it.

Anyway, I have a new provider in place, and I am replacing the methods right now. At this point, I should be able to log in with a user from the outside app, but it's not working; it's still using the DNN accounts. I'll keep at it.

Having done work like this before, if you are interested in hiring out the project; I do have some open time coming up :) mattchristenson@realskydiving.com

I mentioned to the project manager that you might be available to help out, but I got a luke-warm response.

Thanks very much. I'll let you know if we can take you up on the offer.

Speaking from experience, you're going to have a hard time making this work without replacing / modifying the profile and role providers; as well as creating a custom login and user modules.  I made the same mistake you're making in that I wanted to keep all of the information in one place...  in the end though - even though it was being stored in two, it was - from the scope of the outside application - only in one place; as the duplicated data in the DNN data structure is invisible to other consumers of the custom membership data structure.  It is likely that your supervisors or clients do not completely understand that they will in no way be responsible for keeping the DNN table structure up to date when consuming the custom structure through external applications..  This is where my original understanding fell short.

OK, so the more I look at this, the more questions I have. For instance, in the web.config file, there is the usual ASP.NET 2.0 membership section, and the default provider there is "AspNetSqlMembershipProvider". Then there is another "members" section that is a custom DNN section, and the "AspNetMembershipProvider" is set as the default there.

What gives? Why are there two member-related sections and two providers? Is the first one a standard ASP.NET 2.0 provider, while the second one is specific to DNN? Do I have to replace both? Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
