I'm using 2003 server, IIS, and was using SQL2000.  First I upgraded to SQL2005 but it was so slow it wasn't acceptable.  So then I tried to upgrade to v3.3.7 hoping it would improve the SQL2005 performance.  But the install bombed.   Then I restored back to SQL2000 and all was back to normal.

Then I tried to upgrade the SQL2000 and DNN v3.1 to v3.3.7 and I got the same failure at the same place.  So I'm including all the documentation to see if there is a path or something I missed.  Eventually I'd like to go to v4.x but so far haven't had a successful install---another post addresses that.  For now, since it is my main website, I'd like to simply get to the latest v3.3.7.

Clear the search tables prior to the upgrade. I also got confrontated with this issue in an installation with dbowner <> "dbo", where there were duplicate host menu entries, so you might need to theck your database.

Also check the following thread:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/93605/scope/posts/Default.aspx

Although this happened during an upgrade from 4.3.6 to 4.4.0, I believe that the problem had been introduced during an earlier upgrade.

additional info.... I do have a portal on my site that bombed during install so I later created a new one with a slilghtly different name.  DNN won't let me have access or delete this portal otherwise I would have done so.  The error on this site is:

Site Settings

Error: Site Settings is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: The parameter 'roleName' must not be empty. Parameter name: roleName ---> System.ArgumentException: The parameter 'roleName' must not be empty. Parameter name: roleName at Microsoft.ScalableHosting.Security.SecUtility.CheckParameter(String& param, Boolean checkForNull, Boolean checkIfEmpty, Boolean checkForCommas, Int32 maxSize, String paramName) at Microsoft.ScalableHosting.Security.Roles.GetUsersInRole(String roleName) at DotNetNuke.Security.Roles.RoleController.GetUsersInRole(Int32 PortalID, String RoleName) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.PortalManagement.SiteSettings.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Perhaps this is the error in my database that won't let me go any further?   How to delete when in host mode I can't access or edit?

I suggest to compare the portal entries in database tables with the entries for a properly created portal. There might be roles missing or the portal alias, that is preventing the deletion. If you cot a portal crashed on istall, do not try to make it work, but delete it and create a new one.
