Our company has a web farm that includes three front end web servers, a file server, and a database server.  The three front end web servers access the web files placed on a UNC share on the file server.  Everything is working okay but our customers notified me of a random error that is occurring and I noticed the following error popping up in the event log:

System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file '\\server\site\Portals\_default\Cache\VGFiUGVybWlzc2lvbnMtMQ==.resources' because it is being used by another process.

I confirmed that all settings are configured correctly based on the Web Farm support documentation.  We are using DNN 4.4.1 and (I think) that this error did not show up until we upgraded our sites to 4.4.1.  Anybody have any ideas on what is going on and how to correct this as it is starting to annoy our users.

Any help is appreciated...

We are having exactly the same problems that you are seeing, and it is causing us some serious issues. It occurs in both 4.4.0 and 4.4.1, and also occurs when you try and set up a web garden, not just a web farm.

I am surprised that this issue has arisen given that DNN core team said that this release was a performance release, given that is very obvious when you put 4.4.0 or 4.4.1 under load though load testing software.

Our website has anywhere from 600 to 900+ users on it at one time during business hours, and our inability to go to a web farm, or even a web garden is a big problem for us in terms of our ability to meet the needs of our customers.

It appears that the error occurring is proportional to the load the site is under, and for us, unfortunately the error occurs way to frequently for us to even consider going to a web garden or web farm until this issue is resolved.

Sorry we can't be of any help, but if anyone else has a workaround knowing about it would be very appreciated!!

Are there any other companies running their DNN portals in a web farm?  I would really like to get some feedback from anyone else who is running the web farm with 4.4.1.  The issue above is occuring on all of our portals (15) that have been upgraded to 4.4.1.  I did confirm that this error did not occur under 4.3.6 by going back and looking at the logs.  It seems the greater the load on the servers, the more often the error occurs.  If I turn off caching, the error does not occur.  If I change the caching to memory instead of file based, the error does not occur.  So clearly this has something to do with the .resource files under the _default/cache folder being locked by a worker process on one server and attempted to be written to or deleted by another server (or worker process).  Any help would be appreciated in helping us get to the bottom of this.

We experienced the same problems in earlier builds of DNN. This was one of the minor factors in not deploying in the DNN recommended architecture. The main reason being this method creates a single point of failure, should the DFS or storage devise become unavailable...the site is down.

The method we choose was to use the local storage on all web heads and use a file replication software (PeerSync) in real-time to ensure all local file directories are identical at all times. As well the DB's are (transaction) replicated between SQL servers to eliminate this as a single source of failure.

Perhaps this is a method for you to explore.
