Does anyone know what I did wrong with my connection strings in web.config?  I verified spelling is correct, etc.  Using an MS SQL 2000 DB.

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=dnn_magname;uid=VC-11055\dnnmagname;pwd=magname;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=dnn_magname;uid=VC-11055\magname;pwd=magname;"/>

Looks okay to me. For more specific help from the community, you're going to need to describe in more detail not only what the connection string is, but also more about the error you're receiving.

Thank you for your reply.  Here is the error message I'm receiving:

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 04.04.01

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

I copied the code from the latest DNN install download, edited the 2 connection strings in web.config and got the above error.  I have installed DNN before (a previous release of version 4) and remember I had to download the source instead, compile and then copy the files over to my directory root from the Website folder.  Not sure if I have to do this again?  If so, should the latest version of MS Visual Web Developer 2005 be able to do this?  (I previously worked with MS Visual Studio 2005 at a prior location).

Well that's not a very helpful error message. Try checking the sql server logs to see if a connection was attempted, and if so, why the connection was refused. This will help determine who the culprit is here -- a dnn problem, or a sql server configuration problem. If I had to venture a guess, I'd guess that it's a permission error on the account you're supplying to sql server.

There are many, many ways that a DNN installation can go wrong, but the things you described above (source download, recompile, etc) shouldn't effect your ability to connect to the database.

I'm thinking this could be a permission error of some kind too... not sure why however as the user is setup as public and db_owner.  When I right-click on the user in "Users" and then go to Permissions, none of the checkboxes are checked.  I noticed virtually all are checked for the "dbo" database user.  Do I need to do anything with this?

As an aside, I downloaded the VS 2005 trial to compile the source, moved the files from the Website folder over, used same settings in web.config and still have the same issue so know this is not a build issue.  It now seems to be a configuration issue of some kind but I am having difficulty finding it as I followed the directions in the Install Guide.
