Ok... I deleted from version table trying to get install to run again.. it did.. but there is nothing in the version table.

Now when I navigate to the site I get

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

When I select from version there is nothing in there..

yet when I go to the installwizard.aspx page it tells me it is already installed.. how does it know this and how can I force the installer to run again?

Sorry to say, but I think you are going backwards (things are getting worse). 

I'd recommend you restore the old from backup and try the upgrade again.

Hopefully this post helps someone else with this problem.  When I tried to upgrade from 4.3.4 to 4.5.1, I was also getting the dreaded error:

IndexOutOfRangeException: Email

I spun my wheels for hours and I think it is caused by the fact the Installer did not run the database upgrade scripts.  I also think it may be caused by the fact that my portal is using Active Directory for authentication.

So, to fix the problem:

  1. Run every upgrade script in order from your current version +1 to the desired version.  In my case I ran the scripts from 4.3.5 to 4.5.1.  KEEP IN MIND you will have to replace the {databaseOwner} and {objectQualifier} tokens in the file to the correct settings for your database.
  2. Try to bring up your portal - it should now work.
