It's easier than you think.  I have recently setup a DotNetNuke site on Go Daddy manually with www.NorthernStarSolutions.com.

Here is the link for getting the site up and running on the root path www.northernstarsolutions.com/Troubleshooting/GodaddyHosting.

Database Setup:

  1. Select SQL Server.  (Not MySQL)
  2. Enter a username and password (the database name is automatically created for you)
  3. Optional - At this point you can choose to install the Asp.Net Schema.  This is just a pre-built set of tables and stored procedures the the Asp.Net 2.0 framework uses for it's built in User, Role and Membership Manager.  This is not needed or used by the DotNetNuke Framework at this point.
  4. Hit Create or Submit (there may be a confirmation screen before the database is actually created, be sure to accept that screen) - Wait for the database to actually be created. (this can take an hour if the system is busy)
  5. Open the database manager and get the connection and database name information
  6. Add this data to the connection string in your webconfig file

You are now good to go.

A few observations and clarifications.

1. When creating the SQL database, no DSN or ASP.net extensions are needed.  Do not select these options.
2. DNN v4.02 was chosen, so ASP.net version 2 is required
3. I'm assuming that the Install version of the package is to be used, since I saw something about needing to compile the source version.
4. The DNN startup kit is for developers.  No need to download
5. This assumes that the DNN install package (after unpacking, fixing web.config) is uploaded to the Web Root directory, NOT the Portals directory (Right?)  This is different that the ASP.net directions.
6. Editing the web.config file is a little different as the database info must be entered on BOTH the AppConfig and connectionsSettings areas.

The instructions on the site are generic and not meant to be applied to any specific version of DotNetNuke.  The DotNet Framework version required is dependant on the DotNetNuke version you chose.  I have not addressed this issue intentionally as I only wanted to describe the folder permissions that are required in order to install the DotNetNuke Framework.

You can use any package you choose, whether install package, developer Source compiled, the Startkit or a custom version.

The Asp.Net site instructions should not be followed.  Do not combine them with the instructions on my site as they leave you with serious security holes.

There are lots of posts and articles describing and instructing on the rest of the DotNetNuke setup process.

I'm assuming:
1. Your instructions installs the files to the web root directory, rather than a "portal" directory as described in the ASP.net instructions.
2. Installing DNN 4.x using Install package.
3. Mods to web.config include uncommenting the SQL server 2000/2005 section and commenting the SQL Express 2005 section (by moving the --> ) in BOTH the <connectionStrings> *AND* <appSettings> sections.
4. Database connect string is needed in BOTH sections.
