Will app_offline interfere if  you run http://www.mysite.com/instal.install.aspx to initiate an upgrade?

App_Offline.htm will disable all requests through the asp.net processes.

My recommendation for upgrading a site, if you have the ability and content isn't changing constantly. backup the files and DB, restore both on another URL, upgrade that URL. Switch the two IIS sites around, make the live IIS site point to the recently upgraded files/db. That way there's hardly any downtime as the upgrade has already occured.

Thanks Mitchel and Chris, do you have any upgrade recommendations for those of us who have busy forums ?

I made it the following way, as i have the Web-Server in my room and therefore have full access. But maybe this works for DNN-Hosting-Companies as well.

- I created a simple index.html which is telling the the site is going under some maintainance...blablabla.
- i set index.html on top of the list of the default-documents in the IIS-Setting
- upgrade upgrade upgrade
- testing.....fine? ok:
- set index.html to the bottom of the list

Works fine ....

I have a tutorial on upgrades available at my site http://www.mitchelsellers.com.  If you are running a high traffic site though and you really want to minimize downtime AND have the access to do the steps that Chris recommends that would be the best way to limit downtime.  However, it just isn't an option for those of us on environments where we do not control the servers.

hi guys,

I hope you can help with my situation... We are migrating content from our current site to our new site.. However google is crawling both sites and this hurts our ranking due to duplicate content.

So I like to take the new site offline pending our launch date 3 months from now until all the contents are completely migrated.

Is there a way to do this..because the suggestion recommended in this thread bars even me from accessing the site.

Thanks for all your help.
