I was having a similar problem and found the issue. You need to check and see if your DotNetNuke.config file got updated properly. It should have the following section at the bottom of the file. If not add it and try to browsing to your site.

  <skinningdefaults>
    <skininfo folder="/DNN-Blue/" default="Horizontal Menu - Fixed Width.ascx" admindefault="Horizontal Menu - Fixed Width.ascx" />
    <containerinfo folder="/DNN-Blue/" default="Image Header - Color Background.ascx" admindefault="Image Header - Color Background.ascx" />
  </skinningdefaults>

Note: This section should be inside the </configuration> section. The file should be located in the same directory as your web.config file.

Best of luck...
Ron

OH RON, thanks SO much! this is exactly the problem we were having and your fix was the perfect solution!

our exact problem was we were upgrading from 4.6.2 to 4.8 and after a successful upgrade, only SOME of the portals were working! any portal that had completely custom skin and containers was fine... but if the portal used ANYWHERE the default blue skin or container, the portal would fail to load. anotehr symptom was that we could load some portals but none of the admin/manager pages woudl load (again because they used the default blue skin/containers)

So, I checked back and the Install and Upgrade package for 4.8.1 doesn't have the dotnetnuke.config in its folders! So, i went in and added your block of code and now the portals work!

thanks a million

Hi there,

I am new to DNN. I tried to apply the code above within the configuration element in DotNetNuke.config and I got an error as below:

DotNetNuke Error: - Version 04.08.02

An unhandled error has occurred.

Any help? If I remove that code, it will get back the object instance problems. Weird. I manage to get the installation working, just I can't get it to run properly.

Thanks Ron, this fixed it for me as well - though I had to refresh my solution explorer file list as the dotnetnuke.config file (amongst others) didn't appear until I did View - Refresh

I got the same error message with Chua Wen Ching when tried adding code to DotNetNuke.config. My current DNN version is 4.8.4. Does anyone have solutions?
