Aaron,

I suggest you review your information before posting misguiding remarks. From page 36 of the DNN 4 Installation Guide:

In addition to the connection String setting under <appSettings> required in 3.x, 4.x also requires the same connection String to be set under the

<connectionStrings> section.

Although I do not take it personally and don't think of myself a DNN guru by any means, I have to recommend you to be more careful with your posts. The forums are community supported, people that have more experience with DNN are encouraged to participate helping others. I honestly think that disqualifying other posters is a not a good approach.

Finally, if you have found a dozen things missing from the instruction please post them in this forum and ask a moderator to pin it so others don't miss them too and they can update the guides as well.

hooligannes,

Sorry, but if you look around the net there are simply hundreds, if not thousands of people, sure some of them aren't computer literate, that are having issues installing and configuring DNN.  Alot of these are IT professionals and this speaks for itself.  They can download and install other content management portals without any issues.  It is just frustrating seeing so many of them being told to read the instructions.  Those instructions are a pain.  This particular instruction was in the section that references you back to the 3.x section.  So many people go back to that section to check the settings and forget to return do these configuration changes.  Why couldn't you just give out the information instead of saying:  "Read the instructions". That is a demeaning comment to an IT person who has read them but may have missed something.

I have found several things, not sure which of them actually fixed my install:

In IIS after installing .net 2.0 ASP.NET v2.0.50727 is not even in the web services extensions.  I had to manually add it and point to the ASPNET_ISAPI.dll in the v2.0.50727 folder.

Had to copy the siteurls.config from 'website/config' folder to website root.

Had to download DotNetNuke 4.0 template.mdf from www.johnczimmerman.com and put it into \providers\dataproviders\sqldataprovider.  Install neede this it was not there.

Had to add default.aspx to the websites documents tab.

Had to add the IP and Domain name to Portal Aliases in order to view the website on any machine except the host machine, the localhost direct back problem.(I installed DNN as the default web site).

I also had to grant write permissions to the Network Services account to a temp folder in the .net 2.0 root folder, to complete installation though I cannot recall which one off the top of my head.

There were a few other tweaks that I cannot recall, that I did not see in the installation instructions.  As well as alot of information in them that did not apply and was confusing.

I have read the installation guide! Several times.

Respectfully, I think you need to start reading the posts that are left  by different people on the DotNetNuke install forum. We have educated people who are reading the installation guides and not getting results. Obviously this is not a 5 minute install. Read further, I saw a post the other day where someone has been trying to install DotNetNuke for the past three months.

Please re-read my Post hooligannes. You will see that many other people are having the same problems I am having. Re-read the section about how I googled the common connection string error. How others have traced into the DotNetNuke code and have not been able to solve this problem.

If you are convinced that this is a 5 minute install then possibly you can spend some time on this forum helping people by giving some solutions.

Thanks in advance.

I did not mean to be negative in my post. The platform is very easy to use and install but it does not mean that the user shouldn't have a minimum knowledge. Yes, there are several posts that repeatedly say the same and almost 100% of the time it is simply not following the instructions. You might understand that after answering the same thing over and over and having a document that describes in detail the Installation process the fastest answer is help me help you.

I am sure many other members would have stepped in as well, yet I will do it once more. Please note I am not providing details, which are already in the mentioned documentation. Also I make no assumptions about your knowledge, except that you are the administrator of your machine and know your way around windows, IIS and SQL.

DNN 3 in Windows XP and SQL 2000

  1. Download install version
  2. Unzip the file to <DNNFolder>
  3. Set permissions for that directory as described in the Installation Guide.
  4. Open IIS and create a <Virtual Directory>. Point it to the <DNN Folder>
  5. Open your <SQL instance> Create a <DNNDatabase>
  6. Add a <DNNUSER> with a <PASSWORD> to SQL
  7. In SQL give dbowner permissions to <DNNUser> for <DNNDatabase>
  8. Open release.config and set connection strings to your <SQL instance>, <DNNDatabase>, <DNNUSER> and  <PASSWORD>
  9. Rename release.config as web.config.
  10. Call http://localhost/>Virtual Directory>
  11. Done

Add me to your MSN as hooligannes (at) hotmail.com I will guide you step by step and then please come back and say it could take 5 minutes and not three months. This will simply calma down my ego, and is pretty selfish but c'mon humor me!

The written message misses the intention of my words, that's a short coming of this kind of interaction. I was asking politely to know about the manual before saying something untrue (you said instructions didn't say it and did) and never tried to imply any demeaning attitude. As I wrote before this is a subject that does come up daily in this forums and the ones at ASP.NET. I can't repeat my answer time and time again, I could post instructions repeatedly but that would be a waste of time since the instructions are clear and detailed in the documentation. If an IT person read them and missed something, they should re-read them, not make me waste my time and then scorn me about pointing out that it is there after all. I take no offense anyways and have no ill atittude at all.

That has nothing to do with DNN, you should mention that to MSFT.

I am unsure about this one, have to investigate.

This is IIS admin stuff, not DNN.

That's a requirement that doesn't have to do with DNN installation. The issue actually has to do with host resolution and not DNN.

I don't think that is necessary, nd might be caused by another issue related to .NET 2.0 installation and not DNN.

You can discuss each of them and contribute back to the community. There might be issues the Core Team is unaware of so please keep posting.

At this point, I am going to add my 2 cents worth of comments.  As you can see in my other posts, I've had a great deal of trouble trying to get DNN 4.0.2 to install.  In my opinion, any change to IIS, SQL, XP, 2003, etc, that has to be made/included to get DNN to install IS A DNN INSTALL ISSUE,  not IIS, not SQl, etc.

As such, these associated changes should be described and documented in the DNN documentation.  Given the total effort and man hours spent by everyone on this forum asking, re-asking, re-re-asking and those replying, re-replying, etc, it would surely be less expensive (and better for DNN's reutation) to break out the install doc by release and update the doc to include all of the associated changes that are requied to get DNN up and running.
