hassan ali,

I would look through your website directory to see if possibly there are multiple web.config files. Every time I have seen this error that has been the case. Although it generally happens when developing a custom module and VIsual Studio creates an extra web.config, not when setting a site up.

Hope that helps,

Ian

Almost always a separate web.config at a higher or lower level in the folder hiearchy.  Remove or rename the one you don't want.

What's the next step to take to try troubleshooting this error?  There are no additional web.config files in my web.

All of the pages in the DNN portal load and run fine.  Attempting to develop new pages causes a couple of compile errors, which Hassan Ali documented in the first post in this thread.  The code files behind pages do odd things - like not recognizing the System.Web library, the DotNetNuke libraries, and the inheritance of the UI.Page class.  The "Page Events" item does not appear in the class dropdown.

I'm at my wit's end with this.  I've moved a couple of different sites to a couple of different servers, and am getting the same problem everywhere.  I've used two different development machines.  I'm using VS 2005.

Please help me.  This problem renders DNN relatively useless for me.

Thank you.

I figured out my problem.

I was foolishly placing the physical files for the DNN install inside my main web.  So, on an existing website, I was trying to implement DNN as a subweb, and was storing the files like this:

Main Site: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot

DNN: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\dnn

I had then created a virtual directory/application called "portal" and pointed it to C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dnn.  This setup does not compile correctly!  (Although the existing pages do run OK).

Once I split the physical files out like this:

Main Site: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\main

DNN: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\dnn

...things work fine.  Sometimes it just helps to type it all out in a forum, and things become clearer.

Hope that helps somebody!
