Thank you for these very helpful instructions but I am still a little confused. I have SQL Server 2005. I have created the database with the user "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE as the owner and now I am trying to determine what string to use in the DNN web.config file. The connection string which says it is for SQL Server 2005 wants a uid and pwd. I do not know how to specify a uid which has spaces in it and do I just leave the password blank?

Do I need to replace local in Server=(local) if the SQL server is on the same machine?

Sorry, I am trying again from the beginning with a fresh install but it is still very confusing.

Thanks for any help.

hello Eristu;

I too am having real problems with this install. Thanks for posting comprehensive instructions. I have a couple questions:

1) Running the "Virtual Directory Creation Wizard" has a step where it asks to allow the following access permissions [Read, Run scripts (such as ASP), Execute (such as ISAPI applications or CGI), Write, Browse]. Do you know which of these should be selected?

2) I'm a bit short of space on C:, is "C:\DotNetNuke" hard-coded someplace, or can I create it anywhere on a different drive? Also, will users end up writing into that folder when they add modules or make changes? If so, shouldn't this folder be someplace in their website in order to avoid one website update clobbering another - or at least a different folder for each website/user?

Sorry for being so dense, but this dotnet stuff is new to me.

1) Use the defaults

2) Any path can be configured.

Use the trusted connection configuration. More about this in SQL books online

If it's SQL 2005 you need to use the SQL 2005 format Server=.\SQLEXPRESS

First off, I'd like to thank eristu and everyone else here who contributes. Following the instructions in this thread got DNN 4.02 working on my servers, where my week of beating my head against a brick wall did not. I don't know if these are the final settings I will stay with, but at least I have it working and this is a much better starting point for testing config changes and security setting changes.

I'm not sure this is the right thread to ask this question, but I think this will probably be the last "install" issue. One website on my server now has a DNN portal, and I want to add a similar portal to a different website on the same server. Does this entail a complete new install of DNN into a different folder, or do multiple portals for multiple websites share code on the same server and only differ in their config files? My guess is, a complete new install for each website/portal, but I thought I'd save myself a whole lot of time by asking here.
