Hi, Sorry maybe i should have mentioned that i am testing on shared hosting web server (webfusion) so i have no actual access to IIS or the settings. They have said it is an error with my code but it is a basic install with only the database connection strings modified, so i cant see what would cause this. I have tested ok on my local machine without any errors.

Cheers

Has the app ever worked on the host? If so, what changes have you made to the web.config file since it last worked?

I am having the same problems.  I changed my web.config file to view the errors and I still get the same message!  I am getting so frustrated.  I am using GoDaddy and I even called them up without much help.  It's the only copy of web.config that has been placed out there, so I am unsure as to why it will not give me the detailed errors.  I feel so blind trying to install this app!

Wait a minute... Something just came to me. I'm not sure if this is it or not, but open your web.config file in IE (or any XML validation software). You may have some mal-formed XML. You're getting the custom error message because .NET can't see the custom error setting. IE should report any invalid XML.

The more I think about it, the more I think this was my problem.

If you find out a solution post it here, it sounds like I'm having a similar problem. I'm trying to install DNN 4.0.2 on www.magma.ca and I get the same error. I've changed the web.config so that <customErrors mode="Off"/>

You can see the error here: http://209.217.105.38/ which is where I have installed the DNN files and subdirectories.

Now Magma says about their ASP.NET:

ASP.NET 2.0 Framework

Magma now provides the ASP.NET 2.0 Framework on our latest hosting servers. The framework has been installed and thoroughly tested for use in the shared Magma hosting environment. In order to ensure server system availability and stability, we have defined a trust level for the use of ASP.NET 2.0 applications that will restrict certain features of the framework. This will ensure that the resources on our systems are distributed as evenly as possible and that no single application has a negative effect on the other applications or on the whole system.

The trust level implemented is the base Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 "Medium Trust". We also allow connectivity to a Microsoft Access database via ODBC or OLEDB. Some of the main restrictions of this trust levelinclude preventing the application from accessing the registry or accessing files outside a user's home directory. The execution of so-called "unmanaged code" (i.e. code that is not administrated by the .NET framework and which carries out its own storage administration) is not permitted.

Some other restrictions that are in effect in this trust level are:

1. Access to the .NET Framework isolated storage
2. Use of system printers
3. Control of security relavant infrastructure like ControlAppDomain, ControlEvidence, RemotingConfiguration, UnmanagedCode and others
4. Access to the registry
5. Access to confidential environment variables
6. Create or open network sockets
7. Access to the system event log
8. Access to system performance counters

So with these restrictions on Medium Trust is it possible to get DNN to work in this environment. Do I have to get the people at Magma to setup some permissions on the server itself.
