Ian,

Many thanks for your kind help with this.  I was able to merge the two files (by hand - WinMerge showed too many changes).  After the upgrade, it blew chunks, and I finally figured out that it was because I had a missing end comment.  Fixed that and after a heart-stopping 30 seconds, it installed, and all looks good.

It gave a couple errors on some of the minor SQL upgrades, but did install all the way up to 4.8.4.  Should I worry about the smaller errors?  It seems to be working OK.

Thanks again for your help, and have a great long weekend!

Tom

Hey Tom,

I think there are a couple of "expected" errors when upgrading this far -- every time I've done it (recently have upgraded a site from 3.2.2. to 4.8.4) I've received two errors as well. I wouldn't worry too much about them.

As far as WinMerge goes - you can go to the Options -> Compare tab and configure the different settings (such as how it treats whitespace) because sometimes the default compare is a little messy.

Glad everything went well.

Take care,

Ian

Maybe someone can clarify "overlay" for me. If I copy the new install files into my www directory, then my site files are overwritten... right? Or does overlay really mean amend the existing files. I'm a Mac user and replacing the Portals folder means my portals (1, 2, ect) are deleted. But I am working on a PC for my localhost installation. Do PC's amend contents of a folder rather than replace everything? Thanks, Ken

Hey Ken,

In windows when you copy a DNN site over an existing site you will overwrite any files that exist in both places, but if a file only exists in the destination folder, it will not be overwritten.

Does that clear it up for you? I know one of our co-workers completely hosed his personal site when using a mac FTP program to "overlay" the file system - because it deleted everything in the destination and then copied over the new folder....

Take care,

Ian
