Jk,

It is a lovely and very detailed guide, thankyou. But perhaps not for me? I have IIS7, so not all the settings are as easy to find. Also, since I only just installed it, I have placed my virtual directory under the default website. A mistake, I bet. I created my dnn_site and dnn_user in sql server 2003 and edited my web.config in vs2008. I had to do this as administrator. I now start up firefox (or IE7) and enter http://localhost/dnn_site Nothing happens.

Back to the drawing board.

I can't help feeling that maybe I should never have accepted Microsoft's generosity in giving me Visual studio and the real sql server (especially that). It only complicates things. Trouble is, the express version makes it nearly impossible to export databases to a hosting company.

anyway, any further advice on how to manage my combo of vista, vs2008, sqlserver 2003 and dnn stored in c:\program files??

Hi

I've now gone back and done the same thing all over again with the intall package (not the source one!). I also browsed from the IIS manager itself (and without it). I get the following configuration error:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Configuration Error

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Source Error:

Line 87: <system.web>
Line 88: <!-- Ensure validationkey is not set to AutoGenerate,IsolateApps so it correctly supports webfarms -->
Line 89: <machineKey
Line 90: validationKey="AutoGenerate,IsolateApps" Line 91: decryptionKey="F9D1A2D3E1D3E2F7B3D9F90FF3965ABDAC304902F8D923AC"

Source File: C:\DotNetNuke\web.config    Line: 89

A vast improvement on nothing at all!

Did you check this?  This error occurs because you have nested web.config files and the lower one is trying to inherit from the higher one.  Creating an application or getting rid of the extra web.config is the fix.
