I confirm, that DNN 5.1 requires latest version of AD provider to work properly, there have been a couple of other users reported, that they need to disable AD provider in web.config to be able to upgrade.

Usually when I do an upgrade I rename my old web.config and then I rename the release.config to web.config and I manually copy in all relevant data

such as the connection string info, machine key, code subdirectories etc...  After having the above problems I decided to keep my web.config the way it is as a hunch

and not merge my old settings into the new release.config file.

This is not the recommended whay to upgrade - as you effectively end up with the default install settings.  We switched on human freindly urls by default for NEW installs.

While you should always make a backup of your web.config file in case of issues, DNN has had the ability since 4.6 to automatically upgrade the web.config with any changes required to operate.

Adam,

You described every problem I had as well. I don't know how you figured out that the extraction didn't fully decompress, but that was the final piece.

The 5.0.1 version of the ActiveDirectory Provider does not play well with the upgrade. I had to remove it to get past the "Parameter name: key" problem. Also, I had problems with the upgrade zip not fully decompressing. I too pulled it to a separate machine to unzip and then copied it back. I'm back on the air. The 5.0.2 version of AD is a big improvement.

Thanks for posting your findings!

Ward
