Sounds like this could be a Mime Type issue, here's a forum post about similar problems:

Good luck!

Rather than it being a mime type issue, it appears that the .axd extension is not properly included in the IIS handler mappings. For .axd, the GET, HEAD, POST, DEBUG verbs should be mapped to the v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll. You will most likely need to check that with your hosting provider.

Thanks William. I have contacted them, and their initial response is that they do not support DNN on their new service that they call "onCloud". However, I am perservering and trying to get them to add the WebResource.axd and *.axd mappings to their ASP.NET 2 mappings.

I am waiting to see if they might be persuaded. They are one of the few hosts in Canada that I could find that support DNN, albeit on their older "Classic" service.

It works!

After many back-and-forth emails to the hosting vendor's support team, asking them to map the .vxd's properly and several of their attempts still leaving me with the same error, today I get this message from them:

Greetings,

Please try again as the handler mapping has now been adjusted.

So I go to the page and find no errors! I can log in and everything works!
I guess it pays to be persistent. Now if I can just figure out how to mark this thread as 'complete'! (Later, ahh yes, there it is... right after you submit.)

Thanks to all of you who helped with your perspectives on this issue.

Excellent thread!

For the people that reached here, one posible explanation for this error is that your hosting provider overwrite the "handlers" section inside the "system.webServer" section on your web.config once you configured something on your hosting. Review your web.config and check these sections.
