Hello all,

I wanted to know the shortest upgrade path I can use to go from DNN 4.9 to DNN 6.  I have 4.9 running on Win7 with SQL 2008R2.

I've looked at the Manuals, Videos and Wiki and no luck.

The Latest 6.0 Super User Manual doesn't cover upgrading.  The "Detailed Installation" pdf applies to versions 3 and 4. The video "Upgrading DotNetNuke 5.6.1 to 5.6.2 on WebMatrix" would not apply.  There's an upgrading video by Aderson Oliveira about upgrading any version in between 4.0.2 and 5.2.3, so that tells me the upgrade packages can upgrade only certain previous versions.

Is there a document that covers this situation?  There should be a table somewhere showing which previous versions can be upgraded for each downloadable upgrade package version. ie. How old a version it can upgrade.

Thanks.

Iván Torres

My host settings page reports version as 4.09.00, Check for Upgrades is checked and "Upgrade available?" shows nothing.

Thanks for the reply, Pingle.

I hadn't seen that.  I went to the upgrade part of the Wiki and I looked a lot of links and that was at the end in related content in small letters and I missed it.

I see it basically recommends doing it step by step through 5 different upgrades, which I think is excessively conservative an troublesome when one can see that upgrade packages are designed to upgrade from a few versions back before the one you're upgrading to.  I have seen a couple of articles outside the DNN site that talk about the upgrade process, from what I remember one recommended upgrading to 5.5 (more or less) and then to 6.0, and the other one said you could upgrade from 4.9 to 6.0 in one step.  Well, with a free/open source product one can't be too picky and may need to rely on community articles and advice.  I'll look into the articles and see what I can do, probably for my own curiosity since the time spent on research would be enough to just go ahead and run the 5 upgrades. :-)

I would suggest the documentation for the Upgrade packages include an informative note such as:
"This upgrade package will bring installations from 4.04.01 and later up to DNN version 5.05.01.  Upgrading previous versions require upgrading first to version 4.04.01 or later and then running this upgrade package to bring DNN to 5.05.01."

Well, thanks again for the help.

FWIW, I know that one of the DNN Team (Sebastian, I think) sometimes recommends a slightly shorter route depending from where you're starting. I really don't think 4.9 to 6 is a goer though.
