Wolverine,

I just updated a site last night from 4.0.3 to the current 4.4.1. There IS an install process that occurs.

Here is how I did my upgrade:

  • Unzip 4.4.1 upgrade zip to a temp folder on my local machine.
  • Open up release.config from this folder & the live sites web.config files in a text editor.
  • Copy your connection entries (both of them) from the web.config to the release.config.
  • Copy your MachineKey entry from the web.config to the release.config.
  • If you have any other "custom" entries in your web.config, copy them over too.
  • Fire up your FTP tool and transfer everything up to your live site.
  • When done, rename your web.config to web_old.config
  • Rename release.config to web.config.

Delete your temp folder when you're through (I always repeat this process for each site).

Now go hit your site live and the upgrade process will fire off and you should be good.

NOTE: If you don't want to take the chance a site visitor will fire off your upgrade, set the autoupgrade value to false in the web.config file. You'll have to go your site and do the upgrade manually if you choose this route.

Hey Ed,
Thanks a million!  This was clear and to the point of what you actually did for the upgrade.  I didn't realize that it had to go through the install portion...

One question though...When you say FTP the files to your live site, I assume you mean I need to overwrite the current site?  Is that correct?

Thanks again!

You are correct. Overwrite your current files with the files you have in the Temp Install folder.

I upgraded 2 other sites last night and they both went flawless in their upgrade using the same process I outlined.

Hi, I uploaded the update files for dnn 4.4.1 to an existing 4.3.5 portal. replaced the connection info in the release.config to match my web.config now that the site has been updated to 4.4.1 all the info remains but when I try to login as a host or administrator I get a login failed message.

Any help I would really apreciate it.

Alexis

Ed, have you experienced that "Serious" error after upgrading to 4.4.1?
