A couple of simple things first:

1).  Did you set your connectionString with a password (if you need it) for your Database.

2).  If an SQL Server Express database is open in Visual Studio or in the Server Magement Studio then the web app cannot connect.

Hello all! Has anyone seen this before? When upgrading from 4.0.2 to 4.3.3 the upgrade process simply ignores my previous installation and
creates a new empty installation with of a portal that is completley empty. I've updated the sitesqlserver, validationkey, machinedecryptionkey, installationdate and objectqualifier in web.config according to the installation-pdf. The result is the same when upgrading from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3. I've been struggling with this since 4.0.3 was released so I'd really appriciate if anyone could give me some hints.

Assuming that you update all the keys correctly, if you got a new empty database, that means your orgignal database is overwritten, since you are doing an upgrade, you must have something in the old db?

Did you extract the new version files and place them on to the same directory of your orignal DNN site? Or did you create new virtual directory?

If you could provide more information, maybe I can help.

I extracted the files onto the same old directory. The database is not overwritten completly, "databasicly" all my portals still exists, I mean looking just into the db tables it looks fine(portals, portalalias, , but when browsing to the dnn website all I get is an empty webpage that looks like the dnn blue skin, with the breadcrumb telling me I'm at the page ..:: Home ::..  When clicking on the login link it does not show any login input boxes, it's still only an empty page. Browsing to a child portal causes the same behaviour as when clicking the login link and the address bar is showing: http://localhost/Home/tabid/0/ctl/Login/portalid/0/Default.aspx?returnurl=%2fDefault.aspx

Btw, the installation tells me that the installation performed without errors. The db table Versions tells me it's 4.3.3.

Ok, fyi, I solved it. When looking at the db tables I noticed there was duplicates. I failed to notice that the previous version was using a objectqualifier. So if anyone has this problem in the future, installation instead of an update this might be the cause.

Thnx skypekid for your post.

Hello, I need some advise please.

I have purchased a hosting package with an installation of dnn 4.02.

Im very new and not technically minded with website's etc, so I was advised to go with DNN, ive been very pleased with it but I always have errors and problems with the core modules.

After researching through forums the general advise is to upgrade!

But then I read a thread like this litterd with people, more technically minded and more competant that myself having great difficulties. I dont really feel confident in attempting an upgrade myself.

my site is only a gaming site for the moment, as a test-bed to learn DNN, I eventually want to setup portals and such to run some business sites.

I really dont want to lose my current website with the information on it, more importantly the forum and the registerd users..

I need advise on which version I should update to.. or should I wait for an upcoming release?.. my hosting company www.alentus.com doesnt offer any kind of technical support for DNN, (except one installation) should I seek proffesional assistance to upgrade? is there a reccomended company?

Thank you.
James.
