thanks,

I've been searching for weeks... to find out if I needed the \ backslash in my login name (when using SQL Authentication).

it's good to know I can go ahead now and install DNN with a normal login name.

you would need backslash only for using Windows Authentication in SQL Server

My web server and SQL server are different machines. I am following Mark Hammond's videos for installing DNN 7.x and have hit a stopping point during the database configuration because SQL does not reside on the web server. I cannot create the login using iis apppool\ due to it being different machines. What is the best practice to work around this issue and is there a document to reference?

if SQL Server and Webserver are on different machines, you either need to use a domain account (if both are in the same Windows domain) or use SQL accounts - you need to enable mixed authentication for the SQL Server and include User and password in both connection strings in your web.config file (replacing integratedSecurity=True).

Just use a SQL Account. It makes this a non-issue. See my response on page 1 of this thread on how I do it.
