The forums helped me get to where I am - but all the research hasn't helped conquor this problem.

I've got :

XP Media
IIS 5.1
ASP 2.0
DNN 4.3.1
MS SQL SERVER 2005

I get the install of the above to work.

At the bottom of the successful install of DNN - I click to get things going - which effectively starts up default.aspx ala the /localhost paradigm. I can duplicate this at the IE Address line of course at will.

I get an error such as :

You are not authorized to view this page

You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.

If you believe you should be able to view this directory or page, please try to contact the Web site by using any e-mail address or phone number that may be listed on the localhost home page.

You can click search.gif (114 bytes) Search to look for information on the Internet.

HTTP Error 403 - Forbidden
Internet Explorer

NOTE THE FOLLOWING :

0) I am a little rusty - so what may be obvious to you - isn't to me ala VB.

1) The permissions are wide open (I even booted the machine in safe mode to get to the detail of security - which XP home and Media hide in normal mode. This is a good web-page on that topic : http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xpperm/xpPerm1.htm)

2) I can execute ANY OTHER files /localhost in the folder where default.aspx is - including other .aspx files.

3) I don't think it has anything to do with default.aspx.vb (Remeber - me rusty and no a VB guy. I'm not sure - but I rename the default.aspx.vb so it can't be found to try and see if a different or other error occurs as I make the assumption the default.aspx and default.aspx.vb have something to do with each other. I seem to get the same error - hence I conclude it is certainly the default.aspx file giving me grief).

Please help!

Thanks,

In IIS, have you entered default.aspx on the documents tab for the website ?

Yes.

In fact as a test when I make it (and create) a default.htm and do the requisite in the documents tab - that works fine.

Can this be an ASP error of some sort?

I am about to play around by copying html code into default.aspx etc. and getting to see what is happening here (is it the NAME default.aspx it doesn't like or the CONTENTS LOL). This will prove file permissionings etc. are open at least.

I can't tell WHAT is generating that error though. Searched around for the contents of the source as indexing is on for my machine - it must come from some database.

THANKS!

I am having the same issue, but slightly different circumstances.  I'm just testing and see how to work with DNN V432.

I had the site working, then I moved the site to another box and restored it- again all working as expect.  The new box is SQL 2005 (vs SQL 2000) and there was  an issue the collation settings between the two systems so I deleted the SQL 2005 database and performed a new install by running /install.aspx?mode=install ...  The install ran as expected and created the database tables.  No error messages at all during the install.  However, when I went to the site I was hit with a 403 error.

I am running as a user that is part of Administrators group on Windwos XP PRO SP2 fully patched.  I have verified all the usual issues.  Security on the files is set properly.  (Install would have failed otherwise).

I have resintalled the site (unzip over the existing files) and still no luck.  All setting are the same of the orginal system which does work - only difference is SQL 2005 vs SQL 2000.

Is there a way to determine what specifically why IE is complaining and issuing the 403 error?

I would like to get to the bottom of this instead on deleteing all and installing.  (That may not even work ... )

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
Paul.

Can you turn off simple file sharing

Explorer -> Tools -> View -> Very bottom uncheck the "Use simple file sharing" option.

If you can do this then you can look at the directory that DNN is installed in and make sure that the ASP.Net user account has the following permissions: List, Read, Execute, Write and Modify and that all sub-directories inherit these permissions.
