I'm in the process of changing servers. Currently use SQL Server 2008.
SQL Express would save me money. My database in only about 500K. What are the advantages to sql vs express? Would I notice speed or performance issues? Backup issues? Currently backed up hourly.

Chances are that the system will operate exactly the same. Management is a tad more manual.

I agree with Richard - it should work. SQL Express does not have the SQL Server Agent activated (and there is no chance to do that - at least I don't know of a legal one), therefore you have to make your backups using sqlcmd in Windows Scheduled Tasks or something appropriate.

If you are using third party extensions you should clarify if these extensions need something special (full text indexing...).

I would make a backup of the files and database and restore the stuff in a testing environment to see if everything works.

There have been feature improvements of SQL Server Express, Web and Standard edition in recently released version 2016 R1 - all of these now support columnstores and other features from enterprise. SQL server Express is mentioned to support backup into the cloud (Azure), but I haven't checked this out yet. http://www.fmsinc.com/free/NewTips/SQ... might provide a suitable alternative.

Besides, SQL Server Express should be suitable to host a couple of smaller and medium sized websites, make sure, you set "caching" to "heavy" in Host Settings. My Turbo scripts might help to improve performance (please read instructions carefully and start with a database backup).

Wow, why is DNN emailing me notices on post from Dec 15th? Did mailer go to Hawaii for Christmas? I did see posts, as I check website.
Seems like I have hit a new snag ... there is no upgrade (downgrade?) path from SQL 2008 workgroup to SQL 2014 Web or 2016 Express
Host says this needs to be scripted and move one table at a time. Any info on this?
