Hello, maybe someone can help me before I am totally frustrated.

I want to install DNN 4.33 locally on XP Prof with SQL 2005 Express Version.

Steps I did until now:

  • - Extract ZIP File
  • - Set File permissions under Explorer for the ASPNET account.
  • - Configure web.config

When I run now the page I got the following error:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
- the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
- the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

As I described, the permissions mentioned above are set.

Any idea what I can do to solve this problem?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Greetings Wolfgang

I saw, that there is an error in the application log:

the stored procedure GetPortals could not be found.

Anyone with an idea?

Thank you very much in advance.

Greetings, Wolfgang

I resolved the problem.

After debugging I saw, that the code could not retrieve nodes from the web.config file, because VS 2005 added automatically a namespace to this file. After removing the namespace all worked fine.

Greetings, Wolfgang

I'm having the same problem, but I can't figure it out.......

Running Windows 2003 server and SQL Server 2005 standard.....

Run the install and get the error message

Checked Sql Server 1 table (version) added and 3 stored procedures (finddatabaseversion, getdatabaseversion, updatedatabaseversion) added to Sql Server.

Looks like the install hung up at dbo.getportals

Hi jguglielmi,

I found the reason.

My web.config contained a namespace.

I think, the namespace was automatically added by Visual Studio.

So remove it. The first line in web.config must be only "<configuration>".

Greetings, Wolfgang
