So Shawn... are you telling me I can set up my virtual directory in IIS and download the install pack from DNN website and install it directly to that virtual directory and it will work?

 Jonathan

Yes, that is exactly what I am telling you.  Visual Studio is not needed unless you are doing module development.  If you just want to set up a DNN portal,  use the install package.  You can follow the welcome page notes from the starter kit for instructions on setting up IIS and and your web.config properly.

Shawn,

I've done that but I can't find the welcome page notes in hte starter kit. it is just one file and 4 zip files and that is it. I copied the files from the install pack over and I think all I need to do is maybe create a database but I thought when I went through VS earlier, it created the database for me. Sorry for being such a newbie but I really need to get this running ASAP.

Also do I need VS to create a new skin? from what I understand to give my site my own look and feel, I have to create a new skin.

thanks, Jonathan

You don't need Visual Studio for skinning.  Any editor will do.  There is a good skinning document in the doc zip.

First, read the install guide doc (from the doc zip) to make sure you've extracted the files and configured IIS properly.

If you are using SQL Express, ensure it is installed and running on your target server.  That's it.  If you are using SQL Server, you will need to create your new database, and set up the connection strings in your web.config (there are 2).

Now to install your portal simply request this in the browser:  http://[server]/install/install.aspx?mode=install .

OK... I got it to work. I am using SQL express BTW.

Now a couple things is it takes FOREVER (6 to 8 seconds) to come up each time on the default page.

ALSO i get the following when clicking the login button (or regis:

Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Requested Url: /Home/tabid/36/ctl/Login/Default.aspx

Server Error in '/' Application.

The resource cannot be found.

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:1.1.4322.2300; ASP.NET Version:1.1.4322.2300

Now I thought it was funny that I was getting version 1.1x when it listed version in the error above. I told it to use ver. 2.x for the website within IIS. Should I uninstall version 1.x or what????

Thanks, Jonathan

1.1 and 2.0 can live side by side with no issues.  I'd double check IIS is set up properly for your site.
