Is there a document or diagram or something that explains how to navigate to different portals on the same server.

If I have a portal called PORTAL1 and another portal on the same server called PORTAL3, how do I navigate to PORTAL3 on the server. (ie..http://localhost/dotnetnuke_2/?????????)

I would like to know if there is anything showing the hierarchy of a DNN Site.

Thanks.

if you have multiple portals in a single installation, they are treated as separate sites and you need a fully qualified link, otherwise there will be security issues for logged-ni users.

Thank you for your reply, but I think that is fairly obvious.

Perhaps I did not state my question clearly.

If I have a server and it has DNN on it with three portals. How do I get to portal three from the server.

Keep in mind that I am in our company server room. I am behind the firewall and I am physicall typing on the server itself. I am NOT logging in from another computer and therefore cannot use a WWW FQD because of the firewall and the service rules that are in place.

The server url to get to the first portal is http://localhost/dotnetnuke_2.

Logically you would think that the third portal would be  http://localhost/dotnetnuke_2/portals/3.

But this does not work.

Also, what is the structure of Tab ID's . I have noticed paths that look like /portals/?/tabid/23/????.

All I am asking is what is the structure of the server URL that DNN uses to get to portals and specific Tabs or pages on the server itself.

Thanks,

stevieg.

It is all based on what you have setup for the portal alias for each of the sites.

I for example have my root site http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com with a root portal, I then have a child portal http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com/Andy, and another child portal http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com/Mitchel.  That portal is also reachable via http://www.mitchelsellers.com

Every installation could be different, but if you leave the default it would be something like this.

http://www.mysite.com - Main Portal

http://www.mysite.com/PortalAlias - All child portals (Portal Alias is the value you give it upon creation!)

Thanks to everyone for the advise, but I figued it out.

The one issue you were all ignoring is that I am physically on the server. When you are on a server that is behind a firewall and has the local IP's natted, you cannot type its own public url (www.servername.com) it will not resolve .

The way around this issue is simple. Place the alias names in the HOST file and everything works fine.

An example of this is if the webserver has a public url of www.server.com and a local alias of MyServer, simple put an entry in the HOST file of:

127.0.0.1        MyServer

You will now be able to get to it when you are physically on the server itself and from anywhere on the local net behind the firewall.

Thanks,

Stevieg
