I currently have three DNN environments (DEV, QA, and PROD). Development moves from dev, to QA, then to PROD. However, I now have a need to move the users from PROD to DEV (better dev environment).

Has anybody copied the users from one DB to another? With all the relationships it seems quite complex.

If not, does anybody know of any tricks for copying data that has relationships?

Which tables are all included in the setup of a user?

Got it! My vocab was off.

It wasn't the relationships giving me troubles, it was the identity.

Found a nifty command called "IDENTITY_INSERT". It saved the day. It allows you to specify the identity over its auto-increment setting.

Is it the case that a backup/restore of the database cannot be done?

I'm not certain what your development environment is like, but generally the nice thing about developing with DNN in these circumstances is that you can take the production database and restore it locally, point your app to it and away you go.

The only "gotcha" might be that you need to update the production database with some procedures or table changes, but hopefully you've been keeping a nice sql script with your changes.

I actually have a blog post talking about user account migrations....there are a few things you will want to be sure of when doing this type of copy.

The biggest is that your machineKey values MUST be the same for both sites otherwise your users will not be able to login!
