Hi All, (and particularly the DNN Team)

This issue seems to be quite prevalent and I think something should be done to address this for everyone.

My case (very similar to others):
DNN4.5.1 installed on XP & SP2 and SQLServer 2005.
DNN even compiled without issue in VS2005.

Using the Host or Admin accounts, I get redirected back to the home page without error message but NOT logged in.
No Admin or Host tabs or the Control Panel are displayed.

All cookie settings are at their lowest and all cache, cookies and temp internet files deleted.

NO LUCK! Seems to be a common serious problem with no concrete solution and very little feedback from the DNN Team other than Mitchel Sellers...

ANY ideas guys?

Here are 5 other threads citing the same issue:

I had the same problem.   My site was working fine,  I updated it to 4.51 and I could not login.   After a lot of reading I found that the machine encryptions keys in "web.config" had changed.   I restored the original values from a backup and I could log in again.

Remember backups are your friend.  Sometimes your only friends!

Here is the problem entry!

machineKey validationKey="" decryptionKey="" decryption="3DES" validation="SHA1" />

I am using version 4.3.5, and have the same problem. But it seems like it is working when I try loging into the parent portal. I hope this helps.

OK, this is embarassing...and can be added to the list of possible solutions to this problem ('cos there seem to be many)!

I've been pulling my hair out and posting messages and ... turns out "authentication mode" in web.config was set to Windows.
Following various posts here, I changed that to Forms and ALL WORKED! I have full access to everything appropriate to each account.

IF there are any concerns out there about using Forms authentication, please let me know.
Right now I'm just happy to be able to access and work on the site!

When I get around to it, I will try to post a few basic items to be sure to check when investigating similar errors...

Thanks ALL for your help!

I am having the same problem.  I am having it though with new clean install on 2 separate servers.  Identicle behavior.  I have tried every version right back to 3.3.7 and everyone gets the same results.  I am using the release.config as I should.  The machine keys are in it, could that be a problem?  Should I change them or remove them completly?  I have really tried just about everything I can think of.  I have been running 3.1 on a server for about two years and no problems.  Now I can't install any version and get it to work even on a new PC with a new OS.  I am running w2k Server & IIS.

Someone please help.
