The most usefull article i have read is this step by step configuration tutorial :

http://www.dotnetjunkies.com/Article/16267D49-4C6E-4063-AB12-853761D31E66.dcik

I have followed exactly what is there and it works. I have seen the pros, no cons.

Another interesting link is this : www.pipebost.com

it tells you grosso modo what compression you can expect if you buy their product, but the results I have obtained are similar with only the native iis http compression

The remaining mystery is the compression parameters that you will find in the configuration file (0 to 10) ; I am unable to measure any difference with differents settings so I set them to 8 (!?).

One more thing : it seems that it does not improve so much the initial loading of the site. It improves the next requests.

Tell us how much you gain ...

Benoit

Thank you very much zoulou!  I followed the directions from the URL you posted, had no problems implementing the instructions, and when I ran the pipeboost analysis tool it showed a 70% compression of the original page for my home page.  This is exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks again!

Marc

Benoit,

Thanks for the tip!  I'm going to give it a try and see how well it runs.  I'll keep you all posted.

FYI to all DNN folks~

The DHA WebCompression works well as does Slipstream when used alone.  However, when you combine both of them (Slipstream (Spohn Software) & DHA Webcompression) there are some issues (a ton of page load error message crop up in the server logs).  With the combination of the two, I don't see a marked improvement of intial loading AND data compression of the site with the two combined.  DHA, on the other hand, can compress data up to 70% for those who have text heavy sites.

A good site to test your webserver load times is www.internetsupervision.com.

We found configuring IIS6 compression quite a challenge. There's a nice tool to ease the pain, with an eval version available.

What made it worthwile for us is that they've added some browser detection to optimally load pages for different browsers.
