i've also created a social network.  i haven't had the time to package for distribution.  my new code includes personalized messaging, photos, music, friends, comments, skinnable personal pages, and member news/bulletins.  my new code uses jQuery and MS Ajax.  i'll give my code to anyone that wants to build on it -- you'll need to be a developer to use it.  email me ty at otbradio
