I am trying to use an auction module.  I need to run two totally seperate auctions using the same module on the same website (each auction has it's own page).

Page 1 -- ABC Auction

Page 2 ---XYZ Auction

Obviously when I install the module on the second page, it simply points to the same database as the first page.

My host does provide two SQL Server databases, but I can't figure out how to make one instantiation point at database A and the other point at database B.

I really appreciate any guidance.  This is a great community.  Thanks in advance.

Bill

when you place a module on a page, that module is assigned a unique 'ModuleID'. When your module needs to retrieve data from the database, the ModuleID should be part of the query so that only the data associated with that particular instance is returned. That's how you can have multiple modules of the same type running on your DNN web site with each one having it's own data, even though all the data is stored in one database.

If there is some specific reason that you HAVE to have 2 databases, then do not use the global connection string from the web site's web.config file, but use a different connection string that is configured for your module.

I can see in the Modules table the each time I add the auction module it DOES get a unique ModuleID, just as you pointed out.  However, all of the items from the original auction are immediately visible in the new module, which leads me to believe it is pointing at the same DB and not uniquely identifying itself.

I can't find any place to specifiy which DB a specific instance of a module should point at.  I am certainly open to haveing one DB, as you mention, if it could be wired that way.

Thanks,

My apologies, I was under the impression that you were 'writing' an auction module and asking your question as a module developer.

If you are using a 3rd party module, you will have to contact the module's author for help/support.

Thanks for the feedback. i appreciate the direction.  I'm considering testing the addition of a child portal.  Perhaps it will establish a new DB connection if installed within a new child portal.  Somewhat dififcult to get info from vendor due to time-zone issues.
