For the licensing, I am not aware of any usage limitations, granted express does have CPU limitations and other restrictions as far as I know there is no issue using it on a production site as long as it meets your needs.  You obviously would want to double check the EULA for Express but I am 99% sure that I am correct.

It seems you're right.
The EULA is quoted on the microsoft forum below:

and looks like the only limitations are (or were) with regards to "use of the software for commercial software hosting services" (section 4)

Which, is good news, as we can keep DNN on sql server express (hopefully it will be less hassle when moving from our development server (behind the firewall) to a another sql server express on the live server.

...providing you can have both the full version of sql server and sql server express on the same server that is? (we also have full version for other projects).

But not sure which is the easiest method of doing this?
