Carlos & Jeff

That is great so thank you both.  It is much clearer... I am new to the Express version, and the user instance (new DNN install alongside older one).

Looking to switch from a shared SQL server to Express running on my own dedicated server (more control, space etc) so I had been unsure (mostly performance) if there was a lot of difference between the user instance and SQL instance. Now I know it just depends on my needs and performance is not too much of an issue.

Cheers!

David:

One feature about Express you may want to research is that by default it sets the databases to "Auto Close" after the last user disconnects and a period of inactivity .  This may or may not be a big issue to you if the site has a lot of traffic or if you use a keepalive solution.  The overhead is probably not very noticeable in a modern server anyway.  The true SQL Server engine will keep the file open all the time of course.

Thanks for that Carlos. I had seen some mention of it before and will just have to see how it affects us and deal with it then.

Sebastian, Thanks... I did look at that blog post, and I have an unresolved thread here relating to it.

The problem I am having (outlined in the thread) is bringing a SQL instance from SQL Server to SQL Express... can get it working (Integrated Security only) but without any users at all able to log in.

Cheers

if the site is showing up but users cannot login, the issue is not  cause by the database, but by authentication, make sure, that the machine key in your web.config hasn't been changed, if you tried to access your database w/o valid connection string, the installer shows up and alters the machinekey. Another problem can be a damaged cookie in your browser.
