ok understood.

I dont' know exactly what the problem is, so hopefully someone else will comment on it, but it does sound like the site is suffering some caching issues. It look to me as if the site doesn't recycle for a long time, and I understand from other posts that the admin and host menus can vanish over time. Most sites restart all the time because the application gets unloaded and then it starts up again. This keeps things fresh. If yours is being kept live all the time, but has little traffic then it may simply be losing menu items over time.

If you have access to IIS application pool settings, it would be worth setting it to recycle once or more every day. When I used to have a troublesome portal, I had it recycling -34 times. Now it runs well so I let it recycle once in the morning. I would not let it go for days without recycling.

So the question is... do you have access to the app pool.

no I do not have access to the app pool I am hosting on a shared hosting plan.

resetting the web.config fixed the other issue, but the issue of the going for days with out a recycle does not make sense to me. If a user is on the site updating it why would it all of a sudden break?

Because the menu caching was faulty. I'll try and dig up the issue:

I suggest either getting into a pool you can recycle regularly or upgrading to the latest DNN - that would seem the right thing to do in any case.
