I can't seem to find any info on putting an icon on the page title entry to get a custom icon preceding the page title on the browser tab.  Any help?

You might be referrign to the favicon feature, which is not part of DNN as such.

Look up favicon on google, make one and place it in the portal folder.

You are exactly right ... that is what I was looking for.  I went through the whole process but using DNN I am not sure where to put the link to the file I made and put into my root folder.

Any thoughts?

if you want it to apply to all sites put it in the root folder. If you only want it to apply to a certain portal, put it in that folder i.e. Portals\0

be careful, if putting it in the root folder of your DNN installation not to overwrite it during upgrades of the portal.
