I'm sure that the books that tgwaters mentioned will be excellent, as well.  The only catch is that they aren't available, yet.  You can "preorder" them, though.  The two books about DNN 3.x that I mentioned in my previous post are available today.

That's a great question.  Again, I'm only running DNN 3.2.2, but I can share my experience.

When I installed DNN 3.2.2, I didn't initially specify any SMTP settings for the site.  I wasn't able to successfully test any modules that relied upon email at that time, but the rest of the site worked fine.  However, I did have an SMTP Server service on my box (Windows 2000 Server SP4), even though I wasn't using it. 

So, there are several assumptions here.  Assuming that DNN 4.0.2. works very similary to DNN 3.2.2, and assuming that the DNN 4.0.2 installation process doesn't specifically look for an SMTP service, the answer will be "Yes, you can test out DNN without having a mail server."
