Anybody?

i'm really trying hard to convince myself that DNN is a platform I can use for customers and I just can't get myself to that point.

I've had a few contractors tell me they've constantly had problems with speed so I decided to just try it out my self.. I love the flexibility and structure of DNN and if I could just get over this speed hump I'd be set...

But I'm occasionally getting like 20 second load times for the really really basic site that I converted
Which is rediculous
there must be something basic I'm missing

Please be aware, there are different situations, conditioning load time:

  • if the application is unloaded (According to IIS App Pool Settings), ASP.Net needs to recompile
  • if the site is visited the first time, all files need to be downloaded, including images, scripts and CSS
  • on subsequnt visits (within a given time, usually a day) only dynamic content and new images etc. are transferred

to identify, which situation you face is important to determine the cause of speed. App Recycles might be read in the DNN EventLog. Size of transferred data can be determined using different tools, e.g. Yslow for FireFox.

Yea those are actually some metrics I was basing my confusion off of

I have YSlow and firebug that I was using to watch page loads......
The page I'm testing is
http://www.djevenflo.com/BulletinHTML/tabid/154/Default.aspx

The YSLOW result I'm still confused about is
F4. Gzip components

I set my DNN installation compression to GZIP stuff and nothing seems to be gzipping
The other F's are
F10. Minify JS
F1. Make fewer HTTP requests

Looking at the components tab I can see that 3 things are gzipped

 http://www.djevenflo.com/BulletinHTML/tabid/154/Default.aspx

 http://www.djevenflo.com/ScriptResource.axd?....

 http://www.djevenflo.com/ScriptResource.axd?...

It'd be nice if the JS stuiff was combined into a script resrouce and compressed there's some large payloads in the way of JS files
Maybe js files can't be compressed though not sure on that one :)

http://www.djevenflo.com/Resources/Shared/Scripts/jquery/jquery.min.js   is 56 KB  and I'm not even using JQUery
Is there a way to just skip this one?

-I saw the stuff about the app domain being unloaded so I setup a process on the server that hits a page every 15 minutes

But mine stays slow even between page clicks...

It might also be something just specifically wrong with how my computer works :)  I just tried the site on one other system and for the most part it loads the pages pretty fast actually and only has like  a 23 KB payload after initial hit... Which is nice  so it's probably just be something I've tweaked here on my dev system...
But it still seems like there's some excess there in the initial load that I'm curious if I can trim down...

Thanks for the reply

ShaneN,

Out of curiosity, can you take a look at the following two DNN sites with the same evaulation criteria that you are using.

http://www.iowacomputergurus.com
http://www.mitchelsellers.com

My guess is that these two site, which are both DNN sites, will show much different results.

I took a quick look around your site and I think is still plenty of room for improvement, but I would need to get some more information from you before I could make a firm comment.  Can you drop me an e-mail at msellers@iowacomputergurus.com

Yea I don't know

both sites scored an F  with YSlow and on the same things as my site
The same things are gzipping and not gzipping as my site
The payloads of both your sites are around 300 KB's

I don't see that the jquery library is being downloaded which I'm curious how you achieved

And you switched out the DNN menu for a RadMenu so you have licenses for the telerik controls which I'm guessing are more efficient than the default DNN controls...

That was my next step was to kill the DNN Menu and use the aspmenu provider or this othe menu (forgot the name) that people recommended
Cause I'm not very fond of the DNN Menu Provider very much

If I could see a site that gets all the CSS served as a single call and all the JS served as a single call

and they are gzipped
Than I'll be excited :)
