Three years ago, I setup DNN for some folks with three sites and then moved 2000 miles away. They were running beautifullly until last week when all began showing 'Website requires you to login 403 Forbidden' errors instead of their home pages. Having been so long, I don't really recall what I need to be looking for to troubleshoot this. Any clues as to where to begin would be appreciated. I have remote access to the machines.

I would start by looking at the IIS Settings, see if the permissions have somehow changed in IIS to not allow anonymous access.

IUSR_ServerName is specified for anonymous access, and Anonymous Access Enabled is checked.
default.aspx is created at runtime, is it not, so I won't be finding it in a folder?

You should have a Default.aspx file in the root of your dotnetnuke folder, if you don't I would look into why that is.

Right. A simple case of a hacker replacing the default.aspx with his own nasty index.html (which IIS fortunately is not serving up).

Why destroy the site of a simple legitimate small business? Is it that easy for some people to hate someone else they don't even know?

Restore from backup and a full scan? Anything else you can think of?

By the way, your guidance was just what was needed.
