As far as I can tell the "hacky" method Bruce mentions above not longer works with 5.6.1.  We've been using that method (create a directory containing a page that redirects to the target page) to create a few "extension-less" URLs for marketing purposes.  Since upgrading to 5.6.1, when navigating to these URLs, you get a DNN error page stating "that portal alias is not in the database."

The work-around I've developed for now is to create a child portal having the name I want for the redirecting page (e.g., child portal is named "shortname").  Then I set the home page for that child portal to redirect to the target page on the parent site.  Even more "hacky" than the old way.

Anyone know of a work around for creating extension-less URLs that redirect to a real page in the site (e.g., http://www.mysite.com/shortname redirects to http://www.mysite.com/ParentPage/ChildPage.aspx)?

We'll probably end up buying URLmaster.  Seems like a much simpler way to administer this kind of thing.  Still, there should be a way to do it within a standard DNN installation.

Thanks,

Michael Bradley

Yes, that's correct. You need one of my Url Rewriting modules to fix that issue as well. You can use the (free) iFinity Friendly Url Provider to provide a redirect for human friendly Urls. It will also allow you to process extension less Urls. But it can't create a custom Url.

It's available from here : http://www.ifinity.com.au/Products/Friendly_Url_Provider_For_DNN

Simple solution
Add a folder called PressCentre to your root directory.
Add a default.aspx file within the folder
Add a page load sub with a redirect.

Job done
