I had this same problem and it came down to not making the correct database selection during install.  I was using SQL Server 2008 Express and I mistakenly choose the first option  - "SQL Server 2005/2008 (Express) file", instead of choosing "SQL Server 2005/2008 Database".  Once I figured out my blunder and selected the second option the install zipped thru without an issue.  I think I seen the word "Express" and didn't see the word "file".

I have enabled all protocols on the server and client, still the same, I have also installed the SQL Managment suite on a local machine and can login with the correct credentials so I know its not an network issue.
