Trying to step through the site loading up, it appears that when I try to go to one of the failing pages, the page makes it no farther than Line 589 of the Default.aspx.vb file

' add skin to page
SkinPlaceHolder.Controls.Add(ctlSkin)

Entering that line, the following files are hit at the given methods:

admin/skins/current date.ascx.vb (Private Sub Page_Init)
admin/skins/breadcrumb.ascx.vb (Private Sub Page_Init)
admin/skins/privacy.ascx.vb (Private Sub Page_Init)
admin/skins/terms.ascx.vb (Private Sub Page_Init)

After terms is hit, I can step as far as "End Sub" for terms, then I'm served the page mentioned in my original posting.

Everything prior to this point was caused by DNN injecting /%20/ into friendly URLs on a failed login. Disabling friendly URLs has solved that but not the overall problem (nor is disabling friendly URLs going to be an option, so that will also need to be revisited). So now the question is why does authentication work when going to the home page but not on other pages? It's the same exact code no matter where you come from to authenticate.

Is there a way to specify for Visual Studio 2010 to run a particular tabid when I run DNN? Starting IE and then attaching to the process and going to that particular tab doesn't work as all my breakpoints say no symbols loaded and if I just run and then nav to the tabid it isn't testing my problem because that's the exact situation that everything works under.
