Same problem here.... and have been searching for a real solutions for weeks now....

Did you also try these modules/solutions:
http://support.powerdnn.com/kb/a2000/how-to-prevent-stop-registration-spam-from-fake-accounts-dnn.aspx
http://store.dnnsoftware.com/home/product-details/google-recaptcha-registration-form
http://www.interactivewebs.com/blog/index.php/dotnetnuke-modules/dotnetnuke-dnn-spam-registrations-problem-fixed

I agree DNN should solve this problem with a core upgrade (but apparently it isn't that simple).
I searched for this but unfortunately it isn't fixed in the latest release

Tried the last option: http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/...

Makes senses and easy to implement so we give it a try. I will let you know in a few days if the problem with spam registrations is fixed.

All of these suggestions are ok for stopping the registrations, but's that's just the beginning. Once you've had thousands of spam registered users (in our case over 100,000 spam registrations across many sites), and you turn off registration, then delete the accounts, their bots continue to try and login to those accounts, which consumes 100% of the server's RAM.
Then, even setting up a redirect in IIS for /login or /login.aspx or /?ctl=login to "Abort Request" their attempts are still consuming all of the memory.
We've been battling this for weeks. There must be a fix. Our RAM (16gb) and the login attempts are not only consuming alll 16gb,, but are actually needing at least 20gb of ram, which we don't have.
Our other server only has 8gb of ram, runs 72 wordpress sites and is using 54% of it's ram as a comparison to our DNN server which has 16gb of ram and is using 100% memory.
We are losing customers left and right and can't even work on new websites.
DNN SOFTWARE.... PLEASE HELP US FIX THIS ISSUE.

For the first time in 14 years, I am seriously considering leaving DNN hard enough that I interviewed WP and other CMS experts last week to join our team. This is simply costing us thousands of dollars EVERY week!

I agree.    This is a big issue and what response to do we get.   Nothing.    There are a number of issues going on now and all we get is try this or try that.   Wow.

The only thing I disagree with you is how can this be the first time you thought about leaving.   I stick with it because I am familiar with it..  I wish years ago there was a different option that I became familiar with.

Why can't DNN simply respond and say we are working on a solution for you..  not 20 steps for you to take and if you are not a developer/technical that you can actually implement!   I don't have time to implement your 20 step solution for your software issues.

Trust me.. there will be silence.   Actually, spammers are using real email addresses somehow..  maybe just accidental.  This is causing more problems.
