Bob,
DNN Folders Need read Access granted to web users but modify permissions for the user used by ASP.NET.
Godaddy should be able to configure the site to grant permission properly.
Please make sure to unblock upgrade zip (at the bottom of first tab in Files Properties) prior to uploading all files contained.

Cheers from Germany,
Sebastian Leupold

My delay in responding was that I wanted to be certain...

Chris asked about FTP; I used the GoDaddy File Manager, FileZilla and another ftp (java) selectable through GoDaddy.  GoDaddy actually recommended FileZilla.

Sebastian asked if I unblocked the upgrade.zip file.  The answer was yes, but I recalled I did not do it at first but was "pretty sure" I had done it early in the re-tries.  I had done it , though.

I started all over, un-blocking the zip, extracting locally, re-uploading with FileZilla.  I followed the 'new' automatic update using Chris' PE upgrade video as a guide.  [ http://www.dnnsoftware.com/community/learn/video-library/view-video/video/556/view/details/upgrading-a-local-dotnetnuke-pe-installation ]

The first 'naked' 7.0.6 site I tried upgraded seamlessly.  Awesome Cycles running...

Off to try a real site...

Thanks guys!!

Bob

Well, it wasn't pretty...

Repeating the upgrade with a non-trivial site crashed and burned.  Several times. The site is a multi-portal site with a dozen or so portals, a half-dozen different portal skins, Active Forums, and a few other non-standard modules. The base site has been around and upgraded over the past 6 years from DNN3 or 4 to the current 7.0.6.  The error(s) caused the upgrade to hang around 25% through, leaving me in la-la land.

What kinda worked was to take the 'virgin' 7.0.6 site, successfully upgrade to 7.3.4, then add in all of my upgraded modules and skins.  I then exported each portal w/content from the old site and imported to the new site.  Active Forums got trashed, Links did not make the journey and users need to re-register.  But it 'mostly' worked and I learned a lot...  I'm trying to decide whether to try the upgrade again or live with/rebuild what I have and get on with my retirement...  :(

I do have one site, a single-portal local government site with many users and many pages, but one skin [not compatible] and not much unusual stuff.  It is now at 6.0.1 because of the skin incompatibility with 7.  I may try converting it next.  I'm actually thinking about first moving it to new hosting, first...  :)    AppliedI is running a $49/yr special.

I do love DNN, though.  At least today.  Again.

Bob,
usually upgrading is easier than restoring from a template, which might miss a number of configurations.
Make sure to follow the suggested upgrade steps, when upgrading across multiple versions.
I always start upgrading or removing (if not in use) installed 3rd party extensions.
For skins, it might be a good idea to use default skin, when upgrading from e.g. DNN 6 to DNN 7 and re-apply adjusted skin afterwards.

Sebastian Leupold
